The factual entertainment segment is set to see more action with Sony Pictures Network receiving regulatory approvals for its much-anticipated channel Sony BBC Earth.
The channel will be launched in HD.
“We have received regulatory approvals for the launch of Sony BBC Earth, in both SD and HD. We are now gearing up for the launch of these channels and will announce a launch date soon,” SPN said.
The Sony BBC Earth channels will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
BBC Earth is a premium factual entertainment channel that is part of MSM-Worldwide Factual Media Private Ltd. (MSMW). MSMW is a joint venture between Sony Pictures Networks India and BBC Worldwide. The two hand entered into a joint venture in 2015.
The new channel will showcase the work of the leading factual film makers.
SPN has been scouting for a variety of content as it looks to broaden its horizons. The company has also been strengthening its digital platform Sony Liv with a slew of archival content and also original content.
The factual entertainment segment in India domination by History TV and Discovery Channel. In India, Discovery Channel has presence since last 20 years.
Last year, US broadcaster A+E Networks, along with local partner Reliance-owned TV18, has rolled out its factual entertainment channel FYI in India. A+E Networks also operates History TV18, a factual entertainment channel in India
