Ssangyong Motor, a Mahindra Group company, has sold 12,730 vehicles in May, a 25.3 per cent increase over the same month a year ago. This includes 5,270 vehicles it sold in Korea and exports of 7,460 units.
The company’s cumulative sales from January 2013 rose 21.4 per cent compared with the same period last year, it said in a statement.
Ssangyong expects to continue to increase its sales since the company resumed second-shift production at its plant in Korea in the middle of May, which would help it reduce backorders.
“The trend towards weekend leisure travel in Korea is helping drive up our SUV volumes in that market,” said Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra.
The company’s Korea sales uptrend continued for the fifth straight month in May due to robust sales of refreshed models including the Korando series despite a slowdown in the Korean auto market.
The company registered a sharp increase of 28.4 per cent in the Korea market from a year earlier, exceeding 5,000 vehicles during May.
Ssangyong posted a 23.1 per cent rise in exports in May, following an upswing in sales in Chile, other Central and South American markets, and increased sales to the Russian market.
