Sterling and Wilson Powergen Ltd (Sterling) has forayed into the manufacture of gen-sets from 10kVA-500 kVA, and plans to focus on the small gen-set market.

The company hitherto manufactured larger gen-sets from 500 kVA to 3300 KVA.

The entire range of gen-sets is being manufactured at the company’s facility in Silvassa where Sterling has just completed investment of Rs 50 crore for the expansion into the smaller machines. The total installed capacity now stands at 10,000 units per annum.

“We are venturing into smaller gen-sets, and are building a larger dealer network to sell them,” Sanjay Jadhav, President, Sterling and Wislon, said, adding that the pan-India dealer network of 60 will be doubled in the next 12-18 months.

The gen-set business currently has an annual turnover of Rs 700 crore, and the new business is expected to add around Rs 150 crore to the top line in FY 16 with sales of 3000 units.

Sterling is also upping its focus on exports which now account for 20% by value, and has plans to double this in the next 3-4 years, Jadhav said. An assembly plant has been set up in Nigeria to feed the West African market, while SE Asia and the Middle East are the other export regions for it.

Sterling and Wilson, a subsidiary of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group and has a 15-16 per cent share of the Indian market for larger gen-sets.

The total annual Indian market (large and small) stands at around one lakh units, and after a few years of low or negative growth has seen a resurgence in the last six months, Jadhav added.
