Tuticorin-based Sterlite Copper has started despatch of copper anodes via mechanised sailing vessel for the first time. The vessel MSV. Esther Rajathi was flagged off by S. Natarajan, Deputy Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust in the presence of P. Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper. The vessel is carrying 350 tonnes of copper anodes from Tuticorin old harbour to Sterlite's refinery plant at Silvassa in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. According to Ramnath, this is the first time in the history of Sterlite that copper anodes are being transported by this mode, an alternate mode of transport other than trucks. This would benefit the sagging mechanised sailing vessel trade, he added.
