The Suzlon Group said its subsidiary REpower Systems had bagged a 39-MW project from RWE Innogy. The project will be near the city of Gdansk. The wind farm will be RWE Innogy's fourth in Poland.
Suzlon said that 19 of 2.05 MW wind turbines will be built over 15 square km. The project is scheduled for commissioning by early next year. The project has the potential to generate enough power to meet the needs of over 50,000 homes every year.
Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Innogy, said: “With Nowy Staw we are expanding our wind portfolio in Poland by almost 40 MW. This will bring us a step closer to our goal of adding 50 MW of wind capacity every year till 2015. Innogy plans to have around 300 MW in operation in Poland by 2015.”
Electricity generation from renewable sources is supported via a system of renewable energy obligations and ‘green certificates' in Poland. Electricity suppliers are obliged to offer a certain percentage of the energy fed to the grid from renewables. They can comply with this obligation by acquiring additional ‘green certificates', Suzlon said.
