Pig iron maker Tata Metaliks today said starting work for the proposed integrated iron and steel plant in Karnataka is linked to securing permission for an iron ore linkage.
“We have told the government of Karnataka that unless we are sanctioned or approved a secure iron ore linkage we will not be able to take the next step of starting the physical work on that site. It depends very much on their giving us iron ore mining,” Tata Metaliks Managing Director Harsh Jha told reporters here.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Bengal Chamber event here, Jha said that land acquisition for the plant was complete and the company deposited Rs 36 crore to the Karnataka government.
The Karnataka government reportedly acquired 2,500 acre at Haveri district for the three million tonne steel plant of Tata Metaliks.
Meanwhile, Jha said the company completed adding a sinter plant to its unit at Kharagpur in West Bengal, which would add 50,000 tonne production capacity.
With the addition of the sinter plant, Tata Metaliks’ Kharagpur plant’s capacity would stand at 4 lakh tonne.
He also said the company might not post any growth in topline this fiscal as huge investments were made in expanding the Kharagpur plant, but next financial year, it expected “significant” growth.
