As a part of its strategy to revamp the passenger car segment, Tata Motors is planning to launch two cars every year till 2020. According to Ranjit Yadav, President, Passenger Vehicles Unit, Tata Motors, the company will focus on all segments — hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs — and not on a single category.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the launch of its sub-four metre compact sedan, Zest, Yadav said: “We are a full range player and we will look across all categories. The strategy is to have two cars a year.”
Launched on August 12, Zest will focus primarily on personalised experience. The model comes in both diesel and petrol variants.
Zest’s launch will be followed by Bolt, a new hatchback car, later this year.
Eastern Region However, the company does not have any immediate plans to phase out its existing models.
“We do not have any immediate plans to phase out the existing models. Over a period of time we might look at it,” he said.
According to Yadav, high growth in the Eastern region and West Bengal should help witness increase off-take of its sedan model.
While the compact sedan category has nationally grown at 15 per cent, in the Eastern region it has witnessed a 48-per cent growth. In West Bengal, the category has seen a 150-per cent growth.
“Growth is mainly on account of people willing to upgrade (to sedans),” he said.
