Tata Steel has announced that it has started producing coke at its Kalinganagar project in Odisha.
In the 3.3 million tonnes first phase of the project, the steel plant will have two coke oven batteries, each comprising 88 ovens and having a gross coke production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes a year, Tata Steel said in a statement.
The blast furnace, sinter plant, steel melting shop and hot strip mill are yet to come into operation. Commissioning deadlines of blast furnace and other mills are also not clear.
Tata Steel earlier had missed a number of deadlines for the first phase since 2014. According to sources, by the end of this fiscal, Tata Steel may complete the first phase commissioning.
“We are confident of meeting our deadlines for the commissioning of the first phase of 3 MTPA and rolling out of crude and saleable steel from the plant,” the company’s statement quoted Rajiv Kumar, Vice President, (Operation), KPO, as saying.
