Tetra Pak’s packaging material facility at Chakan has been awarded platinum certification for green factory building by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
The facility, which commenced operations in 2012, is the second largest for Tetra Pak globally, and is also its facility to receive a LEED-equivalent certification.
Kandarp Singh, Managing Director, Tetra Pak South Asian Markets, said: “Driving environmental excellence is a strategic priority at Tetra Pak. We are proud that the Chakan facility will now become a global benchmark that others can aspire towards.”
Tetra Pak has received all 81 credits that it applied for, and the platinum certification was based on an assessment of the site in six categories - sustainable site, water conservation, energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, material conservation and innovation.
Several initiatives such as installation of solar panels, rain water harvesting, re-use of waste water and air-conditioning from waste heat of generators, have been undertaken at Chakan to develop it into a green site.
Some of the initiatives recognised by the IGBC were prevention of soil erosion and control, including implementation of mulching, preservation of existing trees onsite, post-construction erosion and sediment control, energy conservation by using heat from our generators to power air-conditioning and usage of light emitting diodes (LEDs).
