Motorcycle brand Triumph plans to expand the Indian superbike industry, currently at around 3,000 units annually, and is eyeing a larger share of the market.
The iconic British bike-maker, which entered India in November 2013, has received 350 bookings so far, Vimal Sumbly, Managing Director, Triumph Motorcycles India, said.
The company is targeting sales of 1,000 units and 1,500 units, respectively in the first and second year of operations, he added.
The company today launched the motorcycle brand in Maharashtra, and opened its first dealership in the state, and the fourth in the country, in Pune.
It will add five more, in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai by the end of June 14 to take its total tally of dealerships to nine.
“We want to have a leading market share and make the Indian superbike industry larger,” Sumbly said.
While Triumph assembles seven of 11 models it offers in India at Manesar, he said that more CKD models will also be added.
The big bikes will however remain the focus, he said in response to whether the 250 cc global bike Triumph showcased at Milan could also be launched in India.
Among the bikes on display for the first time at the launch of a new dealership was the 2300 cc superbike Rocket III Roadster that comes at an on-road price of Rs 22 lakh. It has already received three bookings, dealer Shailesh Bhandari said.
