Pune-based UB Group Company UB Engineering has been booked for evasion of service tax to the tune of ₹35.31 crore.
The Managing Director JK Sardana has been placed under arrest until a hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
A statement issued by AT Nimbalkar, Superintendent, Central Excise and Service Tax Commissionerate, Pune, said that of a total tax liability of ₹35.31 crore, the company had collected ₹30.76 crore from its clients and instead of depositing the same with the Government, had used it for their business.
Sardana, 58, has been placed under arrest as per the provisions of Section 91 of the Finance Act, 1994.
He has been sent to Yerwada Jail until further hearing, the statement said, adding that the case reinforces the Department’s intention to take stringent action against wilful tax offenders, while extending full co-operation to honest tax payers.
UB Engineering is the engineering business arm of Vijay Mallya promoted UB Group, and its businesses include undertaking EPC projects, infrastructure and on-site fabrication of structures.
Initially established as Western India Erectors in 1963, it came under the umbrella of the UB Group in 1988.
