The thin film transistor liquid crystal display (LCD) panel project being set up in Navi Mumbai by Videocon Industries in partnership with the state-run City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is back on the fast track, Mr Venugopal Dhoot, Chairman of Videocon, has said.

Cleared in August 2008, the Rs 8,000-crore project has run into several delays. The Maharashtra government granted it three extensions to complete formalities such as forming of a JV company, getting Central Government subsidy and acquiring the land. The last of the extensions ended in September 2010.

In reply to an e-mail questionnaire, Mr Dhoot said that the project had now got most of the approvals. Excerpts from the interview:

What is the progress on your thin film transistor LCD panel project at Navi Mumbai that had been delayed?

It is on fast track. We are developing thin film transistor technology for LCD panel in our R & D Lab/Factory in Japan.

Have you got the necessary approvals and subsidies from the central government for this?

We have got maximum approvals and also applied for 25 per cent subsidy to Central Government. We have received in principal approval for it.

Has CIDCO alloted 100 acres of land as per the agreement?

A: Some formalities are in progress and we are hopeful of getting land soon. There is no hurdle from CIDCO or the Government of Maharashtra.

Has the joint venture company between Videocon and Cidco been formed?

We have already formed a JV.

Can you give any time frame for starting commercial production?

It will take 3-4 years.

Who will be the buyer for this product?

A: Now-a-days LCDs are used in most of the electronic/electrical products, so there is no dearth of buyers. We also plan to export it.
