Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles (MREV) will take a call on which existing vehicle platform will get an electric powertrain over the next 3-6 months, with the first launch of such a model expected in the next 18 months. The company is also looking at the option of introducing electric scooters as well.
“We have technology that is scalable, so we are evaluating all Mahindra platforms (such as Scorpio and Verito) to see what is feasible in terms of consumer acceptance and costs. We're choosing a few models and it will take 3-6 months to decide product. There has been a thought on electric scooters as well,” Mr Chetan Maini, Chief of technology and strategy, MREV.
The Bangalore-based company, in which Mahindra and Mahindra bought a majority stake last year, is launching its second model — the four-seater electric car NXR — by early next year. A new plant is also being built, which in full swing will add a 30,000 unit annual capacity to the existing 6,000. On the back of an aggressive growth target, it is increasing dealerships to over 100 next year from the current 26.
