IT major Wipro Ltd on Monday said it would expand its existing facility in Kolkata. This announcement comes at a time when the company’s proposal to set up a second campus in West Bengal is apparently facing a hurdle in getting special economic zone status.
Apart from Wipro, the proposed second campus of Infosys is also awaiting SEZ status from the State Government.
Asked about Wipro’s plans for a second campus in Kolkata, Azim Premji, Chairman of the company said: “We are expanding on our existing premises.”
Premji was in the city to attend an interactive session organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Wipro’s existing unit, an SEZ, is spread over nearly 17 acres of land in Salt Lake and employs about 7,500 people.
