Out of a total of 7,756 listed companies, 5,784 have appointed women directors, as on January 31, 2017, Minister of Women & Child Development (WCD) , Maneka Gandhi said in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. According to a WCD Ministry release, this was pursuant to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which had informed the listed companies that as per second proviso to sub-section (1) of Section 149 of the Companies Act, 2013, the prescribed class of companies shall have at least one women director. As per Rule 3 of Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules 2014, every listed company and every public company having paid up share capital of ₹100 crore or more, or having turnover of ₹300 crore or more, is required to appoint at least one woman director, the release added.
