Late on Friday night, the Haryana police moved in to remove the agitating workers from the Manesar facility of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. The workers had been agitating for the past eight days.
The workers were removed a day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court gave directions that there would be no sit-in strike within 100 metres of the Manesar plant and that workers on such a protest at the plant should be taken out.
“The next step of negotiations will be conducted to redress not only the workers' grievances but also the management's concerns,” said the Gurgaon Police Commissioner, Mr S.S. Deswal. The workers claimed they would now sit outside the plant and that the Deputy Labour Commissioner had assured them that negotiations would start before October 17.
More workers sacked
On Friday, the company sacked another 25 workers (including three trainees). There was no production at the Gurgaon plant. The plant will remain closed on Saturday as well on account of a shortage of components due to the strike by workers at Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd. The Powertrain and Suzuki Motorcycle union leaders, however, claimed that the agitation would continue till a permanent solution was reached.
