The huge explosion that sank the INS Sindhurakshak submarine on Wednesday was probably India’s biggest peace-time disaster, said Alok Bansal, Senior Fellow, Centre for Land Warfare Studies. He, however, added that it would be premature to assess the economic impact of the disaster.
“Though this incident is a huge setback, one cannot comment on the economic impact till such time the report is available and the exact extent of damage is known.
The economic fallout will also depend on whether the submarine is able to float or not,” he added.
Capt Bharat Verma, Editor, Indian Defence Review , said the process of replacement of submarines was slow, and this did not augur well for India.
“India has about 12 submarines and most of them are aging,” he added.
