The film industry needs educated, well trained technicians, according to Gauthami Tadimalla, actor and technician in the southern entertainment industry.
“Proper education and training is of paramount importance to work in the film industry today,” she said.
Speaking at a panel discussion, Castles in the Air — Building an Entertainment Business, at Tiecon Chennai 2013, she said the film industry has come a long way over the years, and almost everything about it has changed. Technological growth has brought in multiple revenue streams, and facilities with it.
This necessitates integration of technology into workflow processes of the movie industry, she said.
G. Dhananjayan, Chief — South Business, Disney-UTV Motion Pictures, said piracy is the biggest challenge the industry faces today.
The industry attracts over 400 new entrepreneurs every year.
But, only a few manage to remain after a film or two. What the producer collects in the first two weeks will be his return on investment.
Piracy eats more than 50 per cent of the revenue. If this issue is not addressed, people would not want to invest in the industry any more, he said.
Another panellist, Karthik Kumar, promoter of EVAM Productions, said distribution is another major problem.
The industry is not coming together to sort out this issue, he rued, adding a proper ecosystem needs to be created to fix these issues.
