Owning cars should be made more expensive in metros, Mr Rajiv Kumar, Secretary-General, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said here on Wednesday.

“Time has come to include the cost of land in pricing transport…at least in the metro (cities) in India,” Mr Kumar said while speaking at the World Energy Policy Summit.

In this context, he cited the example of Singapore where “tax on car is (probably) higher than the price of car.”

The time is right to implement such a policy in large cities, he added. He said this in the context of car growth exerting pressure on roads.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales recorded close to 30 per cent growth in fiscal 2010-11 against 2009-10.
