The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the CBI on the plea by the DMK MP, Ms Kanimozhi, and Kalaignar TV Managing Director, Mr Sharad Kumar, both accused in the 2G spectrum case.

The duo, accused of taking bribe, had moved the High Court challenging the order of the Special Court which rejected their bail plea last week. They are currently lodged in Tihar jail here.

The High Court also directed the CBI to file a status report of the probe and the judicial proceedings in the case. It will now take up the matter on May 30.

The Special Court had turned down the bail plea saying the allegations against them were ‘grave'. It also said that there were apprehensions that the accused, if released on bail, may influence the witnesses.

Ms Kanimozhi had sought bail before the Special Court saying that even in cases of grievous nature, an accused can be enlarged on bail on the ground that she is a woman. In her bail plea before the High Court, she cited the need to take care of her lone child, who is school-going. She also said her husband was employed overseas.

Ms Kanimozhi claimed that she was falsely implicated in the case due to ‘biased media reporting'. She added that she cooperated with the CBI during the probe and voluntarily complied with the court's summons. Besides, Ms Kanimozhi cited the Special Judge's observation in the order that she had shown “extremely dignified conduct” in the court.
