New Zealand’s Christchurch city, the centre of a damaging quake in February, was again rattled by a magnitude 4.2 aftershock today.
The quake struck 11 km south-east of Lyttelton at a depth of 10 km early this morning. It was felt widely in Christchurch.
According to a report in New Zealand Herald, around 4,000 aftershocks have rattled the Canterbury region since February 22 when a magnitude 6.3 quake struck Christchurch, killing 181 people.
The latest was a magnitude 4.2 aftershock that struck at 8.38 am (local time).
GNS Science said the quake was “widely felt in Christchurch”, with reports it was felt strongly in Bexley, Burwood and Redcliffs.
Since the February 22 devastating quake, there have been at least 3,985 aftershocks of any size in the Canterbury region.
