China’s northwest Gansu Province was hit by a moderate earthquake today, a day after twin shakers rattled different parts of China and caused widespread damage to property.
An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the city of Dingxi at 1:18 a m (local time), China Earthquake Networks Centre said.
The epicentre, with a depth of 8 km, was monitored at about 34.5 degrees north latitude and 104.2 degrees east longitude, the centre said in a statement.
Yesterday, the same region experienced a 5.4 strong quake at the the border area of Sichuan and Gansu provinces though no casualties were reported.
Also Xinjiang province was also jolted by a 6.0-magnitude quake yesterday following which more than 3,800 people were evacuated and 824 houses toppled.
No casualties have been reported so far. But direct economic losses of more than 66.9 million yuan ($10.5 million) have been incurred, local officials said.
The regional bureau of civil affairs initiated a third-class emergency response to the quake.
A total of 200 tents, 1,000 bedclothes and 1,000 shoes have been allocated to quake-stricken areas. Schools have been temporarily closed and two work teams have been dispatched for rescue and recovery work.
The earthquake was also felt in the nearby counties of Xinyuan, Gongliu and Nilka.
