With parking space becoming a constraint in the city, Ambattur Industrial Estate has come up with a parking lot spanning about four acres at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore within the estate.

Mr Dilip Kumbhat, Chairman, Chennai Auto Ancillary Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Company, said, “We were having discussion on using the two acres of an 8-feet-deep sewage swamp and area adjoining it for productive purposes, an idea came up of converting it to a parking space,” he said.

The members discussed that heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses were being parked on the side of roads which were a hindrance for moving traffic.

The industrial estate has two sewage treatment plants a 3 mld (million litres a day) plant in the South phase and 2 mld in the North phase.

By having a modern sewage plant, the estate has been able to convert sewage water into water that can be used for landscaping and other purposes than drinking.

The estate had spent about Rs 8 crore on these treatment plants.

The parking space thus created can accommodate 400 heavy vehicles.
