Aviation companies owed Rs 40,621 crore to banks as on June 2012, of which the outstanding loan by country’s largest lender, State Bank of India, is over Rs 5,000 crore, the Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The banks have disbursed Rs 47,056 crore to airline companies from 2009-10 to June 30, 2012.

TAX EVASION: The Government detected alleged Central excise and service tax evasions of about Rs 5,995 crore during 2011-12.

A total of 450 cases of service tax evasion involving Rs 5,012.90 crore and 350 cases of Central excise evasion involving Rs 982.80 crore were registered in the last fiscal, the Minister of State for Finance, S. S Palanimanickam, told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

TAJ HOTEL AUCTION: The Delhi Development Authority has informed that no decision has been taken regarding the auction of Taj Mahal hotel, the Minister of State in the Urban Development Ministry, Saugata Roy, told Rajya Sabha.

NGO ACCOUNTS: The Government has frozen accounts of 32 NGOs and banned 72 other voluntary organisations from receiving foreign contributions for alleged irregularities.

The Minister of State for Home, Mullappally Ramachandran, said in the Rajya Sabha that on the basis of the complaints received in the past and enquiries made, 24 cases have been referred to CBI while 10 cases have been given to State police.

A total of Rs 9,946.91 crore was received as foreign contribution by various non-governmental organisations in 2007-08, Rs 10,993.56 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 10,352.07 crore during 2009-10.

CASTE CERTIFICATES: As many as 1,832 appointments in various Government Departments were allegedly secured using fake caste certificates during 2010, the Government said. “Information about appointments secured on the basis of fake or false caste certificates is not Centrally maintained,” the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, V Narayanasamy, told the Lok Sabha.
