A recent World Bank survey found that India lags behind the rest of the world in terms of the percentage of citizens with a bank account, but was much closer to the global average when it comes to borrowing from formal institutions. In India, 35 per cent of people had formal accounts versus the global average of 50 per cent and the average of 41 per cent in developing economies.
