Hundreds of newscasters working as casual employees of the All India Radio (AIR) have pleaded for a hike in payment of remuneration for their contract job in consonance with the contents of the Department of Personnel & Training (DOPT) office memorandum of August 1988.

In a memorandum to the Union Information & Broadcasting Minister, the News-Casters (Casuals) Association here recalled that following an apex court order in 1986 clearly spelling out remuneration to be paid at the rate of one by thirtieth of the pay at the minimum of the scale drawn by the regular staff plus dearness allowance where the functions performed by causal assignees remain the same as those of the regular staff, guidelines were laid down by the DoPT in 1988.

But the fees being disbursed to the causal newsreader-cum-translators (CNRTs) of News Services division of AIR in all its regional centres as also here remain “much lower” than prescribed in DOPT rules.

Stating that the functions performed by them are not only akin but identical to those of regular staff, the casual employees said their selection process is also pretty much the same such as written test, voice test and interview “without any reservation” policy.

They said their fee was raised by Rs 15 per shift and was fixed at Rs 340. They pleaded for a reasonable hike in fees to contract and casual employees as per DoPT norms linked with dearness allowance across all regional offices of the All India Radio.
