David King, former Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, on Thursday said use of imported coal is against India’s economic interests. Pointing out that imported coal is increasing India’s debt burden,
King advised the country’s planners to harness non-conventional energy sources such as solar and wind.
“Why are you (India) importing lot of coal? It (is) actually harming your own economy. It is worth (it) if you go for solar energy,” King said.
He was addressing an interactive session on climate change and legislation, organised jointly by the British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, and the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
King pointed out that India could possibly replace its demand for coal with non-conventional options in the coming two decades.
The climate change expert also sought for a reduction in oil consumption to maintain a sustainable economy in developing countries.
