There is a need for educating people on combating drug-resistance, according to Dr G.S. Rao, Managing Director, Yashoda Group of Hospitals.
Speaking at a seminar on combating drug resistance organised on the eve of the World Health Day here on Thursday, Dr Rao said: “Ruthless prescription of antibiotics by registered medical practitioners, ayurvedic doctors, over the counter sale of antibiotics are some of the reasons for growing drug-resistance.”
Protecting antibiotics
There was a need to protect antibiotics for future generations, he added.
Mr B.P.S. Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Hetero Group of Companies, said many microbes had adapted themselves to survive drug therapy.
Lower efficacy
Drugs including anti-HIV and anti-malarial were already showing lower efficacy due to growing drug-resistance, he added.
Mr R.P. Meena, Director-General, Drug Control Administration, Andhra Pradesh said doctors should follow guidelines issued by bodies such as World Health Organisation while prescribing drugs. Drug resistance is the reduction in effectiveness of a drug such as an anti-microbial or an anti-neoplastic, according to Wikipedia.
