The Bharatiya Janata Party said the United Progressive Alliance Government had failed in managing the power failure crisis and in implementing a future-oriented policy in the sector. The party spokesperson, Mr Prakash Javadekar, said the Centre owed an explanation to the people. “Virtually half the country’s population has been affected by the grid failure. The Government should be held accountable for this,” he said.
The BJP said the UPA Government had thrown 60 crore people of the country and 19 States into darkness. “This drama has been going on for the past two days and there seems to be nobody to own responsibility and accountability,” Mr Javadekar said. Thermal power plants were not provided with coal and those with permits for coal did not have sanction to run plants. He said the Government had not implemented the Electricity Act properly.
