Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) on Saturday urged authorities to take steps to protect over 1000-year-old Jews Synagogue and cemetery at Mala in the district.

INTACH’S Thrissur chapter convenor K V Abdul Azez told reporters here when 40 Jews families from Mala left for their native plaace at Israel in 1955, they had handed over the local panchayat 4.5 acres of land consisted of their synagogue and cemetery with protecting them as heritage destination.

He alleged that the Panchayat authorities had alienated 3 acres of land from it and made a stadium, synagogue was converted into a community hall and a shopping complex was constructed, violating the terms and conditions of the agreement entered with the Jews and the Panchayat.

Now project was being implemened in the remaining land for promotion of tourism, with an estimate of Rs.1.61 crore granted by the Tourism Department of Kerala Government.

If the proposed project was executed, it would damage the Jews’ heritage memorials and would be the violation of terms and conditions of the agreement, he added.
