The Union Minister of State for Power, Mr K.C. Venugopal, has said that the State government is planning power generation from waste. A German delegation will visit the State shortly to recommend a system in this regard, he said.
Inaugurating a one-day workshop on environment conservation organised by Kerala Catholic Bishops Council here, the Minister said the State would hold discussions with the delegation to explore ways for introducing the system that has been successfully implemented in Germany.
The Minister said that steps should be taken to change the perception that environment and development cannot co-exist. Development projects should be implemented by reducing environmental problems.
He said that dropping a few coal-based power projects on environmental grounds had dealt a serious setback to the country’s power sector.
Kerala is benefitting from increased allocation of power from the Centre. However, the demand for power in the State and the country in general is on the rise, calling for more power projects. The Minister hailed KCBC for its meaningful intervention in various fields, including environment conservation.
Bishop Abraham Mar Youlios discussed an environment policy document prepared by the KCBC. Rubber Board Research Wing Director Mr James Jacob led a class on spiritualism through environment-friendly lifestyle.
