The Indian Music Industry (IMI), a consortium of 142 music companies, is stepping up initiatives against digital piracy.

IMI officials addressed the media here on Thursday to explain a Kolkata High Court order directing 387 ISPs to block 104 illegal music (copyright infringing) Web sites.

While the market for digital music in India is estimated to be around Rs 5,000 crore, legitimate revenue is only Rs 350 crore. The attempt is to grow this pie by preventing piracy, said Mr Vijay Lazarus, President, IMI.

He said, “As 3G and 4G services come in, digital music will become an even bigger part of our business. This judgment is only the first step. We welcome legitimate music Web sites to partner us. And we invite illegitimate music Web sites to become legitimate by agreeing to a reasonable licensing and fee agreement.”

From 300 Web sites researched, IMI shortlisted 155 and zeroed in on 104 ‘grave offenders' to seek legal action against.

ISPs like Sify and Airtel have already complied with the Kolkata High Court order, according to IMI.

The consortium will pursue more Web sites, including file-sharing sites for copyright infringement, said Mr Lazarus.
