A Centre of Excellence will be set up at Manesar in Haryana for reducing noise pollution generated by automobiles by April next year.
“The Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be provided all the financial support,” the Secretary in the Department of Heavy Industry, Mr B.S. Meena, said on the sidelines of a function organised by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) today.
An investment of Rs 100 crore will be required for setting up the CoE for International Noise, Vibration and Harshness (INVH) which will be funded by NATRiP, the ICAT Director, Mr Dinesh Tyagi, said.
ICAT, which is a part of the government agency NATRiP, assists the automotive sector and render services in the field of automotive design, test and validation.
Noise pollution, which is a global issue, has a detrimental impact on human beings that may lead to various health problems like hypertension, aggression and high stress levels.
Various countries like the US, Canada and Europe are using different strategies for mitigating noise pollution, including limitation of heavy vehicles and vehicle speeds, usage of noise barriers and alteration of roadway surface texture.
NATRiP, which comes under the Department of Heavy Industry, aims at creating core global competencies for the country’s automotive sector.
During April-February 2010-11, car sales grew by 30.34 per cent to 17,88,503 units from 13,72,192 units in the same period a year ago.
