Nine months since the launch of the Aadhaar project in Maharashtra, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued one crore Aadhaar numbers. “It took three months to cross the 10-lakh mark and only another six months to reach the one crore Aadhaar enrolments mark. This is yet another milestone, en route to our goal of issuing 60 crore Aadhaar numbers by 2014,” Mr Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, UIDAI, said. Enrolments are in progress in more than 25 States and Union Territories by more than 30 registrars through over 11,000 operators, according to an official release here on Thursday. “At present, the Aadhaar ecosystem is enrolling more than 4,00,000 residents a day,” said Mr R.S. Sharma, Director-General & Mission Director, UIDAI. “Enrolment will accelerate in the coming weeks, as more registrars begin enrolling residents. Our next milestone is to reach 10 lakh Aadhaars a day by October 2011,” he added.
