An India-specific online tool to help companies manage their water resources was launched here on Tuesday.
The tool has been developed by a group of 14 companies in India, such as BASF, Bayer, BP, Jain Irrigation, ITC and Pepsi, along with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The software has been developed by tech major Infosys.
The India Water Tool is a free IT-based resource, which integrates groundwater data from across India, a WBCSD release said.
“Any company operating in the country can use the tool to input its location and water-use data, and it will automatically generate maps and charts displaying which of the company’s operations face the biggest groundwater availability and quality risks,” it added.
The tool, which can be of help to small and large companies across sectors to draw water use strategies, has primarily used data from the Central Ground Water Board of India.
Lauding the effort, Sushil Gupta, Chairman of the Central Ground Water Board, said by providing data access, the India Water Tool, could help companies to take an evidence-based approach to draw their water management strategies.
