In his first media interaction after taking over as Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said he would like to get into “positive” politics to take the country forward rather than fight with each other.

Talking to reporters at the AICC headquarters here on Wednesday, Gandhi said the environment and debates in politics are “extremely acrimonious”.

“I don’t want to get into negative politics. I don’t want to be critical of everybody. I want to get into positive politics. Positive politics is what is going to take this country forward,” he said.

Asked to respond to the recommendations of the Justice J.S. Verma panel’s findings on the increasing cases of violence against women, he evaded a direct reply. He, however, said the Congress party was the most powerful instrument to change things in the country.

“I think Congress party is the best instrument to bring youngsters into politics and I think it is the most powerful instrument,” he said, and added that the party would be accessible to as many youngsters and experienced people as possible.

On the first day in office in the new role, he interacted with the AICC general secretaries and is learnt to have told them that his idea was to combine the energy of youth with the experience of the elders in the party.

The AICC may soon be reshuffled with more young faces at key positions, sources said.
