A two-week national level exhibition-cum-sale of silk products from across the country was inaugurated here on Tuesday, under the aegis of the National Handloom Corporation Ltd (NHCL), as part of its initiative to expand the silk market in the country.
The Union Minister of State for Textiles, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, inaugurated the event.
On display
Silk products on display include Moonga silk from Assam, Tassar from Bihar, tribal works from Chhattisgarh, Kosa silk from Jharkhand, Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, Bandhej from Rajasthan and Kantha Tangai from West Bengal.
Good demand
The handloom sector in the country is estimated to employ some 43 lakh persons directly or indirectly. Although the power loom sector and the technological advancement in weaving pose threat to the handloom sector, some exotic silk products such as Pochampalli, Kanjivaram and Ikkat, still have a buoyant demand in the domestic market, according to NHCL.
