States that have put in place adequate environmental protection rules with regard to small mining projects of less than five hectares would now be exempt from taking Central Government’s clearance, Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, said on Tuesday.
The decision came after a meeting of the Minister of Mines and Steel Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Coal Piyush Goyal.
The meeting discussed the situation arising out of the decisions of the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal pertaining to environment clearance for mineral leases of less than five hectares area.Earlier, the National Green Tribunal had banned mining of minerals without clearance from the Union Ministry. The Supreme Court, too, had taken a similar stand, mandating that even smaller mines need to take Central clearance.
