The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is planning to introduce a Unique Identification Number for hallmarked jewellery. The move is expected to ensure better traceability along with consumer protection. The number would protect consumers from being cheated while purchasing ISI-marked products, Sunil Soni, the Director General of BIS, said here . BIS has also decided to launch an ‘i-Care’ programme targeted at consumers, the industry and the market. The programme would also look at enhancing interaction with industry and encourage them to take licences from BIS.
