The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has sought the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s views on Foreign Direct Investment limits in news broadcasting.

It has also asked for views from the Press Council of India for change in FDI caps in the print sector. The Ministry said since the consultations will take time, the FDI limits should remain unchanged.

The Mayaram committee had suggested that FDI caps in news broadcasting and print be increased to 49 per cent from26 per cent. The Ministry had earlier held consultations. However, the discussion remained inconclusive due to divergent views.

While the Indian Newspaper Society has sought more time to give its comments, the News Broadcasters Association has not submitted its views.
