The West Bengal Government today called upon NGOs to help create awareness about environmental issues, saying that the Government alone did not have enough public reach for the job.
“You NGOs have a social responsibility. You will have to take up campaigns against environmental pollution and create awareness about steps that can check pollution, because the Government or the State Pollution Control Board is not able to reach everyone always,” the State Environment Minister, Mr Sailen Sarkar, said at a training camp for NGOs organised by his department.
He assured the NGOs that the Government would always support the various environment-related programmes that they may take up.
Mr Sarkar also inaugurated five Continuous Real Time Noise Monitoring Stations in the city, installed jointly by the State Government and the Centre.
The stations, each costing about Rs 9 lakh, have been set up by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board in collaboration with the Central Pollution Control Board as part of the National Ambient Noise Monitoring Network.
According to PCB Chairman, Mr P. N. Roy, continuous monitoring of noise would generate base-line data on a regular basis for policy makers and implementing agencies to take effective action for noise pollution control.
