Cold, frost and fog would variously impact North and East India and a fresh easterly wave sustain showers in the South during the first week of New Year.

South Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala along with coastal Karnataka are expected to benefit from occasional showers during this period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) continued to warn of frost in parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh until Tuesday.

Cold wave (cold, sinking air on a cloudless day) has been forecast in parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh.

A feeble western disturbance with its accompaniment of moisture, clouds and warmth would reverse these conditions a bit from Thursday. Given this, cold day conditions would prevail over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and some parts of West Uttar Pradesh during next two days.

FOG OUTLOOK

Large scale dense fog may not descend on Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and North Madhya Pradesh until Tuesday, the IMD said. However, the same would develop over parts of Indo Gangetic plains from Wednesday onwards. Ahead of this, minimum (night) temperatures might fall a tad. In the South, a prevailing easterly wave on the way out has thrown behind trough of lower pressure from Comorin area to North Maharashtra coast.

Another trough lay in wait over Andaman Sea as a fresh easterly wave readied itself to move to the west towards Sri Lanka and adjoining peninsular India.

RAIN IN SOUTH

Rain or thundershowers has been forecast at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Thundershowers might also break out at one or two places over Maharashtra during next two days and over east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha from Tuesday.

The rains are expected to pick up in strength during the next few days until Monday next (January 7), the IMD outlook said.
