The Coir Board plans to launch a slew of new products as well as initiatives to grow its domestic sales.
“The Coir Board is planning to launch low-cost products, popularise coir-based products in north and north eastern states and incentivise entrepreneurs to take up value-added products,” said the Coir Board Chairman, Prof G. Balachandran.
The board expects these initiatives will boost sales from domestic business over 65 per cent to Rs 2,000 crore for the current fiscal.
The overall growth for the fiscal is expected to increase 15 per cent.
Potential in Karnataka
The Coir Board is also planning to double coir fibre production in Karnataka as the state is one of the major coconut growing regions in the country. Currently, the state's share is less than 10 per cent out of a total production of 5.3 lakh tonne coir fibre output in the country.
As part of this scheme, four clusters have been indentified in Karnataka which include, Channapatna, Hassan, Gubbi and Arsikere.
A sum of Rs 1 crore each has been sanctioned for regeneration of industry through cluster based development, Mr Balachandran said.
Under rejuvenation, modernisation and technology upgradation (REMOTE) scheme in the state.
The Coir Board in 2011-12 has disbursed Rs 20 lakh as subsidy to set up 10 tiny household units and also has disbursed Rs 1.60 lakhs as subsidy for two spinning units in the state.
