Sri Lankan tea continued to fetch the world's highest price in calendar 2011, reveals an analysis of the market reports received from auction centres across the globe.
At Colombo auctions, prices averaged $3.25 a kg. This was 0.91 per cent less compared to 2010.
Kenya tea fetched the second highest price of $2.72 (up 7.09 per cent) at Mombassa auction.
Indian teas fetched the next highest price average of $2.22 (down 3.06 per cent). The average prices fell because of a sharp decline in North Indian auctions. In the North, prices dropped to an average of $2.49, marking 4.60 per cent decline. In the South, prices rose to an average of $1.50, up 1.35 per cent.
Bangladesh teas at Chittagang auctions fetched $2.14, down by as much as 18.01 per cent.
Indonesian teas at Jakarta auctions got $1.97 (up 8.26 per cent) and Malawi teas at Limbe auctions got $1.61 (up 1.45 per cent).
Collectively, South Indian teas fetched the world's lowest price average of $1.50 a kg.
