The three-day “Vivasaya Thiruvizha 2013” was launched at the Agricultural College and Research Institute here on Thursday.

The agri-tech event is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (Madurai Chapter) in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Government.

It aims to bring the latest technologies and best practices from the industry to the farmers of the State.

Addressing the event, State Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Sandeep Saxena urged farmers to adopt modern technology and techniques in the context of difficulties in getting skilled farm labourers for work. This could lead to huge profits and higher productivity, he pointed out. He added that farmers should be sensitised on the importance of value addition.

In his address, Satyabrata Sahoo, Commissioner, Horticulture and Plantation Crops, said 50 per cent of the horticultural crops harvested in the State come from the southern districts.

Kathir Kamanathan, Chairman, CII-Madurai Chapter, and V. V. Rajan Chellappa, Mayor, Madurai Corporation, participated in the event. About 70 stalls are showcasing farm equipment, implements and accessories and innovations.
