The Centre is likely to include the sericulture sector under the UPA’s employment guarantee programme to integrate small-scale and marginal farmers into the scheme.
Union Textiles Minister K.S. Rao has said he has discussed the issue with Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, who has agreed to the proposal of expanding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to silk farming.
The scheme promises 100 days of employment every year to each rural household.
Rao also announced the notification of the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme for the modernisation of the textiles sector with an allocation of Rs 11,952 crore for implementation over the next five years.
Launched in 2009, TUFS has helped the industry garner investments of Rs 2,43,000 crore.
The Cabinet had decided to extend the scheme during the 12th Plan (2013-17) in August this year.
