A volume of 12.48 lakh kg has been catalogued for Sale No: 38 of Coonoor Tea Trade Association auctions to be held on Thursday and Friday, says an analysis of brokers’ listing.
It is about 40,000 kg more than last week’s offer and 1.08 lakh kg more than the offer this time last year.
Of the 12.48 lakh kg on offer, 9.02 lakh kg belongs to the leaf grades and 3.46 lakh kg belongs to the dust grades. As much as 11.85 lakh kg belongs to CTC variety and only 0.63 lakh kg, orthodox variety. The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 0.37 lakh kg belongs to orthodox while 8.65 lakh kg, CTC. Among the dusts, only 0.26 lakh kg belongs to orthodox while 3.20 lakh kg, CTC.
The substantial portion of this volume comprises fresh teas totalling 11.99 lakh kg. Only about 49,000 kg comprises teas which had remained unsold in the previous auctions.
Last week, 115 CTC marks got Rs 100 and more. Homedale Estate tea, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the CTC market at Rs 157 a kg. Hittakkal Estate and Vigneshwar Estate got Rs 143 each, Blue Mont speciality Rs 136 and Kannavarai Estate Rs 135.
Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Chamraj got Rs 200, Highfield Estate Rs 184, Havukal, Kairbetta and Glendale Rs 167.5 each. In all, 30 marks got Rs 100 and more.
In the leaf tea auction, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) and Tata Global Beverages Ltd bought good medium varieties. Duncans Tea Ltd showed interest on better medium brokens.
In the dust tea auction, Tata Global bought better medium smaller grades. HUL and Godfrey Philips India Ltd were selective. Duncans Tea did not operate.
