K. Gopal, a senior IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, assumed charge as the Tobacco Board Chairman on Thursday. He relieved Executive Director C.V. Subba Rao of the additional responsibilities as the in-charge chairman after G. Kamalavardhana Rao, the former Chairman, was posted as the Secretary of Department of Revenue and Disaster Management in Kerala.
Gopal served as the Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation before being given the present assignment. He has taken charge of the board at a crucial juncture, as e-auctions have been introduced in Andhra Pradesh as well as Karnataka this season. Farmers are also demanding insurance cover for the crop lost to seasonal vagaries and another demand is that penalties imposed in the past for growing excess crop should be reduced.
