The increase in fuel prices has begun to cast its shadow on the prices of essential commodities as Amul, on Monday, announced an increase in milk prices by up to Rs 2 per litre from October 3, 2012, a move that is likely to trigger an increase in prices of commodities across the board.
“For now, we have increased prices in Gujarat only. No decision has been taken yet on the prices of Amul milk in other States,” R. S. Sodhi, Managing Director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) told Business Line, confirming the price rise.
However, an increase in prices of Amul milk marketed in other States seems to be only a matter of time as GCMMF will have to shell out increased transportation costs to carry milk and milk products outside Gujarat due to the recent increase in diesel prices.
Currently, GCMMF markets 40 lakh litres of milk daily in Gujarat in four varieties depending upon their fat content: Gold, Shakti, Taaza and Cow Milk.
The price of Amul’s top variety, Gold, has gone up by Rs 2 per litre to Rs 40 a litre in Gujarat. In the three other varieties, a one rupee per litre price hike will be effected from Wednesday.
Apart from milk, prices of other Amul products, including curd, buttermilk, ice-cream, cheese and paneer are also set to go higher.
