Chemicals player BASF bought Bayer’s assets in August

German chemical giant BASF has added seeds to its portfolio — the Nunhems brand — following the recent acquisition of select assets and businesses of Bayer Crop Science, said Rajendra Velagala, Business Director, Agricultural Solutions, South Asia, BASF India Ltd.

The company has also strengthened its digital farming offering, he said.

“Today, BASF is stronger than before as an agricultural solutions provider. This recent acquisition has resulted in major additions to our global business,” Velagala told

BusinessLine.

BASF closed its acquisition of a range of businesses and assets from Bayer Crop Science, the Indian subsidiary of Bayer Germany, on August 16, 2018.

The company has now added Nunhems, the vegetable seeds business, and Basta, a brand of non-selective herbicide from Bayer to its portfolio.“Nunhems India has the Naktuinbouw Authorized Laboratories (NAL), the authorised quality control (QC) labs, the quality management systems and best in-class research and development (R&D) facilities as key differentiators…The acquisition of the Nunhems business will be a significant addition to the BASF Agricultural Solutions business in India,” said Velagala.

Solutions for farmers

Velagala also spoke about BASF’s recently launched innovations such as Sefina insecticide for cotton and vegetable farmers.

With its portfolio of agricultural solutions and ongoing investments in R&D, the company hopes to deliver innovations that will help address farmers’ needs such as growing more high-quality and nutritious food in a sustainable manner, he said.
